Design Your First Label

This comprehensive tutorial will guide you through creating your first professional label from scratch. By the end, you'll have a complete understanding of the label design workflow.

What You'll Create

In this tutorial, you'll create a simple product label with:

  • Product name and description
  • Price
  • Barcode (linked to SKU)
  • Company logo

Step 1: Prepare Your Data

First, create a simple spreadsheet with the following columns:

Save this as an Excel file (.xlsx) or CSV file.

Step 2: Open the Label Designer

  1. Go to Label Designer
  2. You'll see a blank canvas with a sidebar on the left

Step 3: Import Your Data

  1. Click the Data Source tab in the left sidebar
  2. Click Upload File and select your spreadsheet
  3. Your columns will appear as available merge fields

Step 4: Set Up Your Page

  1. Click the Settings icon (gear) in the toolbar
  2. Choose a preset:
    • For standard labels: Select "Avery 5160" (30 labels per sheet)
    • For custom size: Enter your dimensions
  3. Click Apply

Step 5: Add Elements

Add Product Name

  1. Click Text in the left sidebar
  2. Click on the canvas to place the text box
  3. Type {{Product Name}} - this will pull data from your spreadsheet
  4. Format it: Make it bold and increase the font size to 18pt

Add Description

  1. Add another text box below the product name
  2. Type {{Description}}
  3. Keep it at a smaller size (12pt)

Add Price

  1. Add a text box in the top-right corner
  2. Type ${{Price}}
  3. Make it bold and use a bright color (e.g., red)

Add Barcode

  1. Click Barcode in the sidebar
  2. Click to place it at the bottom of the label
  3. In the properties panel, select Code 128 as the barcode type
  4. Bind it to the SKU field

Add Logo (Optional)

  1. Click Image in the sidebar
  2. Upload your company logo
  3. Resize and position it in the corner

Step 6: Preview Your Labels

  1. Click the Preview button in the toolbar
  2. You'll see all your labels with real data
  3. Use the arrows to flip through different products
  4. Check that everything fits properly

Step 7: Export and Print

  1. Click Download PDF
  2. Open the PDF file
  3. Print using these settings:
    • Scale: 100% (Actual Size)
    • Fit to Page: OFF
    • Paper Size: Letter (or A4, depending on your template)

Tips for Success

  • Test Print: Always print one sheet on regular paper first to check alignment
  • Data Quality: Clean your data before importing - remove empty rows
  • Font Sizes: Use at least 10pt for readability
  • Margins: Leave some margin around text elements to avoid cutting off
